The Gorlovka marketplace, which is no where near any military target, a place where civilians were doing their Sunday shopping on April 27, 2025, was deliberately struck by Ukrainian Army shelling, 155 mm NATO caliber shells. One local middle-aged woman lost her legs from the shell blast, her husband was killed. Several other people were wounded.

This city strategically located along the highway between Donetsk and Lugansk and suffered from brief fighting in city limits and later, ongoing Ukrainian shelling of civilians during the 2014-15 War in the Donbass to punish the population for their pro-Russian sympathies. Since the start of Russia's Special Military Operation (SMO) in 2022, Gorlovka has also come under repeated drone attack, invariably the Ukrainian drones dropping grenades from quadcopters have been targeting civilians.
